Sea \(f\) una función definida a trozos de la siguiente manera:
\(\hspace{2em} f(x)=\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} f_1(x) & \mbox{si } x < a \\ f_2(x) & \mbox{si } x \ge a \end{array} \right.\)
siendo \(f_1\) y \(f_2\) funciones continuas.
Para calcular \(\displaystyle \lim_{x\rightarrow x_0} f(x)\) pueden distinguirse tres casos:
1) \(x_0 < a\)
\(\hspace{2em}\displaystyle \lim_{x\rightarrow x_0} f(x) \hspace{-0.5cm} \underset{\begin{array}{c} \uparrow \\ f_1 \mbox{ continua} \end{array} }{=} \hspace{-0.5cm} f_1(x_0)\)
2) \(x_0>a\)
\(\hspace{2em}\displaystyle \lim_{x\rightarrow x_0} f(x) \hspace{-0.5cm} \underset{\begin{array}{c} \uparrow \\ f_2 \mbox{ continua} \end{array} }{=} \hspace{-0.5cm} f_2(x_0)\)
3) \(x_0=a\)
\(\hspace{2em}\displaystyle \lim_{x\rightarrow a^-} f(x) = f_1(a)\)
\(\hspace{2em}\displaystyle \lim_{x\rightarrow a^+} f(x) = f_2(a)\)
- Si \(f_1(a)=f_2(a)\) entonces \(\displaystyle \lim_{x\rightarrow a} f(x) = f_1(a)=f_2(a)\)
- Si \(f_1(a) \neq f_2(a)\) entonces \(\displaystyle \lim_{x\rightarrow a} f(x)\) no existe.
